Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

Nobody else had Eric Gentry anywhere near the 176th overall pick. The 49ers did, by 93 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

With interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese slipping to No. 16 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick40 Rnd2 Emmanuel Pregnon
They paid sticker price for Emmanuel Pregnon in Round 2, Pick 8, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick58 Rnd2 Omar Cooper Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Omar Cooper Jr. in pick 58, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick74 Rnd3 Malik Muhammad
No edge and no loss on Malik Muhammad in pick No. 74; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94 Rnd3 Joe Royer
A straight-up fair deal on Joe Royer at the 94th pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick127 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
A curious use of slot 127. Interior defensive lineman and quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Domani Jackson did not.
Pick133 Rnd4 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at slot 133 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd4 Kevin Coleman Jr.
They went early on Kevin Coleman Jr. in the 138th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick168 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Payton. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171 Rnd5 Rueben Owens II
A real head-scratcher, Rueben Owens II in Round 5, Pick 33 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick176 Rnd5 Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry at pick No. 176 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick251 Rnd7 Zen Michalski
Value said wait; Zen Michalski in the 251st pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
