Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Packers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Packers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
They will need Turner to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman in Round 1, Pick 25 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at the 35th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick41
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa in No. 41 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick57
Rnd2
Trey Benson
They reached a country mile for Trey Benson at slot 57, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick72
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick 72, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick88
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 88th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tykee Smith adds a safety and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick125
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 125, where Dominick Puni graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick133
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kris Abrams-Draine in pick No. 133. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick135
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cedric Gray at linebacker with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
Pick203
Rnd6
Shemar Turner
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shemar Turner well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick217
Rnd6
Jawhar Jordan
They paid sticker price for Jawhar Jordan in No. 217, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick246
Rnd7
Zion Nelson
No edge and no loss on Zion Nelson in slot 246; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
