FutureF
A passer of the future in Williams, and a F, for the Chargers. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chargers started one anyway for Xavier Thomas, 46 picks ahead of schedule. A F, plain and simple.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In pick 1 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick5
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In slot 5 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick8
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick22
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
A reach for Jonathon Brooks in No. 45; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick72
Rnd3
Blake Corum
Blake Corum in the 72nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
Tyler Davis in Round 4, Pick 8 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick122
Rnd4
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers at the 122nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick145
Rnd5
Khyree Jackson
A slide stopped in slot 145, with Khyree Jackson worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick186
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
They will replay Ainias Smith at the 186th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Reuben Fatheree II
They jumped the gun on Reuben Fatheree II, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jordan Jefferson
A big swing on Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 216, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
They reached into another round for Xavier Thomas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
They talked themselves into J.J. Weaver at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick229
Rnd7
Steele Chambers
Value said wait; Steele Chambers in Round 7, Pick 9 says they were not listening. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
