The Browns drew a line under the quarterback search with Ward: C-. The board owed the Browns one, and it paid up: Tre Harris, the No. 18 name on the board, sitting there at the 204th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. It lands right in the middle: a C-, no more, no less.
Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In pick 29 they get a long-term answer under center, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick39
Rnd2
Ashton Jeanty
Taking Ashton Jeanty in pick No. 39 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick40
Rnd2
Wyatt Milum
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 40th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick61
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick67
Rnd3
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at pick No. 67 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jahdae Barron
They robbed the room for Jahdae Barron here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick92
Rnd3
Nick Emmanwori
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at pick 92. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick93
Rnd3
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in No. 93 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick167
Rnd5
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the 167th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick179
Rnd6
T.J. Sanders
T.J. Sanders at Round 6, Pick 4 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Dylan Fairchild
Circle this one: Dylan Fairchild at the 193rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick204
Rnd6
Tre Harris
The board fumbled Tre Harris all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Gunnar Helm
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Gunnar Helm in the 213th overall pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215
Rnd7
Josaiah Stewart
Steal is underselling it; Josaiah Stewart at slot 215 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
