Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureF
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a F. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
The Schlee pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
They took Jer'Zhan Newton at par in Round 1, Pick 14, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick26
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In No. 26 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick56
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at the 56th pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Blake Corum
No edge and no loss on Blake Corum in pick No. 76; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick80
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at pick 80 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Beau Brade
Beau Brade in slot 113 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick115
Rnd4
Junior Colson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jamari Thrash
A quiet steal in pick No. 122: Jamari Thrash for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Fair-plus on Khyree Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick149
Rnd5
McCallan Castles
McCallan Castles at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick174
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 38 is lovely value for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick177
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi in the 177th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten slipping to the 209th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick212
Rnd6
Omar Speights
They paid sticker price for Omar Speights in slot 212, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick213
Rnd6
Isaiah Neyor
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah Neyor in No. 213. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Sheridan Jones
No drama and no debate, Sheridan Jones went about where he belonged in pick 215. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick245
Rnd7
Demani Richardson
A straight-up fair deal on Demani Richardson at slot 245, value and slot in agreement. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick255
Rnd7
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 35 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick256
Rnd7
Collin Schlee
A reach for Collin Schlee in the 256th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
