FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Smith: B+. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Brashard Smith, the No. 100 name on the board, stolen at the 230th overall pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Every board in the league had Griffith lower, and that gap is the story. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In No. 17 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
They barely believed it either: Jalon Walker still on the board at pick 44. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick48
Rnd2
Dylan Fairchild
No drama and no debate, Dylan Fairchild went about where he belonged in slot 48. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick49
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
The board fumbled Kaleb Johnson all the way to pick No. 75, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick99
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 99th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at Round 3, Pick 36 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick111
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malachi Moore in the 111th pick, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jake Majors
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo at slot 185 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick226
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick230
Rnd7
Brashard Smith
They will replay Brashard Smith at pick 230 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick248
Rnd7
KJ Jefferson
They reached a country mile for KJ Jefferson at the 248th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick249
Rnd7
Deion Burks
They took Deion Burks at par in pick No. 249, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick255
Rnd7
Tyler Cooper
A reach for Tyler Cooper in No. 255; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
