The Texans let Mafah fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Phil Mafah, the No. 138 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 164. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the Bryant reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In slot 30 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Pick62
Rnd2
Abdul Carter
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 30, where Abdul Carter graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Kenneth Grant
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kenneth Grant at pick 94 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
A premium they did not need to pay, Cobee Bryant a notch or two before his time. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick164
Rnd5
Phil Mafah
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Phil Mafah in pick No. 164, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick244
Rnd7
Will Sheppard
No edge and no loss on Will Sheppard in No. 244; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
