Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Texans. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took Jaylon Carlies at pick No. 248, roughly 36 spots before his name belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
McClellan at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
No edge and no loss on Byron Murphy II in the 23rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick59
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell in pick 59 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick85
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
They took Roman Wilson at par in the 85th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123
Rnd4
Max Melton
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and pick No. 123 is lovely value for the cornerback. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick127
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at No. 127, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick164
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
No drama and no debate, LaDarius Henderson went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 28. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
Circle this one: Jase McClellan at the 239th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jaylon Carlies
Value said wait; Jaylon Carlies in pick 248 says they were not listening. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
