Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Texans won the night they stopped Davis from sliding. Grade: B-. When a board-topper like Tacario Davis slides to the 41st pick, you do not overthink it, and the Texans did not. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will need Monheim to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 24th pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tacario Davis
You do not let a cornerback like Tacario Davis reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick56
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts is a better player than slot 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick88
Rnd3
Donovan Edwards
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Edwards at pick 88, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jonah Monheim
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jonah Monheim this early at Round 4, Pick 24. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
A wild overpay on Alfred Collins in the 155th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216
Rnd7
Steve Linton
A reach for Steve Linton in pick No. 216; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
