Draft Grade — Vikings

FutureC-
The Vikings answered their biggest question with Maye. Grade: D-. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Vikings, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. It is not that Brownlee Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They banked enough surplus on Jacobs to cover a lot of smaller sins. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the 3rd overall pick they get the arm they will build around. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In No. 16 they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa at pick No. 49 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick88
Rnd3
Bralen Trice
Circle this one: Bralen Trice at slot 88 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick107
Rnd4
DeWayne Carter
DeWayne Carter at Round 4, Pick 7 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick117
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at the 117th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Mekhi Wingo at the Round 4 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 128 on Jarvis Brownlee Jr. with safety unsolved.
Pick156
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at the 156th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick166
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
They did well to land Mason McCormick in slot 166, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
A tidy bit of business in the 176th overall pick, where Luke McCaffrey graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick187
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 187 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick230
Rnd7
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs in pick 230 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick237
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They paid up for Matthew Jones at pick No. 237 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
