The Vikings drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: B. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Getting Simpson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 27th pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick52
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
Nice patience on Kamari Lassiter, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick87
Rnd3
Trey Benson
They took Trey Benson at par in No. 87, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick99
Rnd3
Malik Washington
Malik Washington at pick 99 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick108
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in pick No. 108 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams in the 129th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
You do not let a cornerback like Jaylin Simpson reach slot 157 and blink. They did not. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick167
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
They liked Grayson Murphy enough to skip the value, taking him in the 167th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick174
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tykee Smith at slot 174. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd6
Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at pick 177 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick188
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
A tidy little value on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 188th pick, a step better than break-even. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick214
Rnd6
Trente Jones
Trente Jones at No. 214 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick217
Rnd6
Erick All
Erick All at Round 6, Pick 42 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Magee
The board had Jordan Magee higher than the Round 7 slot, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick232
Rnd7
Cedric Johnson
Fair-plus on Cedric Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
