A weekend the 49ers spent ahead of the board, for worse: F. Nobody else had Rivaldo Fairweather anywhere near the 255th pick. The 49ers did, by 160 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. However the rest shakes out, Thornton Jr. at that price is a win they earned.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left quarterback open, and the grade is the bill.
