Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C+
ValueA- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A franchise passer in Penix Jr. headlines a C+ weekend for the Bears.

You build a draft on nights like this. Marcus Harris had no business being available in Round 7, Pick 9, and the Bears did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

Michael Penix Jr. gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In pick No. 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
Michael Penix Jr. at Round 1, Pick 27 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick29 Rnd1 Jared Verse
A tidy bit of business in the Round 1 slot, where Jared Verse graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II at the 35th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick61 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 61 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Pick73 Rnd3 Tyler Nubin
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Nubin at pick 73 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick95 Rnd3 Ja'Tavion Sanders
You do not let a tight end like Ja'Tavion Sanders reach the 95th overall pick and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick122 Rnd4 Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
They read the board right and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 22. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick132 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster slid further than he should have, and pick No. 132 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick143 Rnd5 James Williams
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, James Williams in slot 143, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148 Rnd5 Josh Newton
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to Round 5, Pick 12, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick149 Rnd5 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 149th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick187 Rnd6 Trevor Keegan
They barely believed it either: Trevor Keegan still on the board at pick No. 187. The roster fit checks out.
Pick208 Rnd6 Anthony Gould
Anthony Gould in the 208th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick223 Rnd7 Kamal Hadden
Circle this one: Kamal Hadden at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick229 Rnd7 Marcus Harris
Somehow Marcus Harris was still sitting there in pick 229, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252 Rnd7 Trente Jones
They robbed the room for Trente Jones here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
