The phones sank the Colts this weekend: D. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Christian Jones at Round 5, Pick 17 is 37 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Colts had louder needs to answer first.
Murphy II falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick43
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at the 43rd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss in slot 46 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick64
Rnd2
Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick74
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at pick 74 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick82
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 82 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117
Rnd4
James Williams
A curious use of No. 117. Quarterback and running back needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kamal Hadden
They took Kamal Hadden at par in pick 132, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick153
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Christian Jones in slot 153 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick193
Rnd6
Omar Speights
A reach on Omar Speights in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick201
Rnd6
Brevyn Spann-Ford
A reach for Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick No. 201; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick235
Rnd7
Dylan McMahon
Dylan McMahon in the 235th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
