FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Patrick Payton went at the 133rd overall pick, a good 66 picks before the board was ready. Put together, it is a D-.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Igbinosun pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
However the rest shakes out, Lew at that price is a win they earned.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
KC Concepcion
In slot 27 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
They jumped the gun on Dani Dennis-Sutton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick58
Rnd2
Keionte Scott
A premium they did not need to pay, Keionte Scott a notch or two before his time. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick92
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Circle this one: Connor Lew at Round 3, Pick 28 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
No edge and no loss on Zachariah Branch in pick 102; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick127
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg at pick No. 127 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick133
Rnd4
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in pick 133 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick138
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Davison Igbinosun in the Round 4 slot leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kobe Baynes
Kobe Baynes at No. 171 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick174
Rnd5
Red Murdock
Red Murdock slipping to pick No. 174 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
