Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D+
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Steelers robbed the room for Starks. Final grade: D+. Somebody took the Steelers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Starks falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Reaching for McLaughlin left real value on the table behind him.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the 30th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick57
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick64
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at No. 64 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick83
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in Round 3, Pick 19 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Charles Grant in pick 111 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick123
Rnd4
Will Howard
Somehow Will Howard was still sitting there in the 123rd pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick156
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
They liked Seth McLaughlin enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 5, Pick 18. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick161
Rnd5
Tommi Hill
No edge and no loss on Tommi Hill in pick No. 161; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick163
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bhayshul Tuten in the 163rd pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick185
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They took Dont'e Thornton Jr. at par in No. 185, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick229
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Craig Woodson at pick 229. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
