The Saints cashed the board's mistake on Vaki: B+. When a board-topper like Sione Vaki slides to pick 239, you do not overthink it, and the Saints did not. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Every board in the league had Taylor lower, and that gap is the story. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 20 they get a difference-maker at receiver, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
They robbed the room for Quinyon Mitchell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick51
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson in the 51st overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick119
Rnd4
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the 119th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick150
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Mason McCormick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
They jumped the gun on Jordan Jefferson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick179
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in slot 179 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199
Rnd6
Trey Taylor
Trey Taylor at pick No. 199 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick222
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
You do not let a cornerback like Dwight McGlothern reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Sione Vaki
They will replay Sione Vaki at the 239th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
