FutureA+
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. The Will Howard pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 120 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Paige falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Tre Harris
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick22
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
Princely Umanmielen at pick No. 22 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick49
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick52
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A straight-up fair deal on Sonny Styles at the 52nd pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jaxson Dart
They let Jaxson Dart come to them and pounced at slot 71. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick84
Rnd3
Josh Simmons
Josh Simmons slid further than he should have, and pick 84 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick88
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick101
Rnd3
Davison Igbinosun
A reach for Davison Igbinosun in pick 101; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick116
Rnd4
Maxwell Hairston
By-the-book stuff, Maxwell Hairston at slot 116 squarely in line with his ranking. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick120
Rnd4
DJ Giddens
A reach on DJ Giddens in No. 120; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jake Briningstool
They paid up for Jake Briningstool at the 123rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick141
Rnd5
Will Howard
A real head-scratcher, Will Howard in Round 5, Pick 3 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick163
Rnd5
Henry Parrish Jr.
They paid a round early for Henry Parrish Jr. in the 163rd pick, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick175
Rnd5
Nick Martin
Nick Martin in pick No. 175 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick184
Rnd6
Dane Key
A tidy little value on Dane Key in the 184th pick, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick197
Rnd6
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger in Round 6, Pick 22 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick204
Rnd6
Stone Handy
This one needs a full-page explanation: Stone Handy in the Round 6 slot, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick223
Rnd7
Terrance Ferguson
They did well to land Terrance Ferguson in pick 223, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224
Rnd7
Makari Paige
A safety of that caliber at the 224th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick227
Rnd7
Denver Harris
They paid sticker price for Denver Harris in slot 227, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
