Joe Montana was born on June 11, 1956 in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, won a national championship at Notre Dame after the 1977 season, and was drafted by San Francisco in the third round in 1979, 82nd overall. He won Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV with the 49ers and was named most valuable player of three of them. He was the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1989 and 1990 and was selected to eight Pro Bowls.

An elbow injury that required surgery cost him the 1991 season and all but one game of 1992, and Madden NFL 92 had him at a calculated 86 for 1991. San Francisco traded him to Kansas City on April 20, 1993. He started eleven games for the Chiefs that season and reached the AFC Championship Game, and Madden NFL 94 listed him at a calculated 79 for the year.

He started fourteen games in 1994, his final season, and Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 96 for that year. He announced his retirement on April 18, 1995 at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco. He finished with 40,551 passing yards and 273 touchdown passes, the 49ers retired his No. 16, and he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
