Sports Illustrated projected Cortland Finnegan to go undrafted. Instead the Titans spent a seventh-round pick, 215th overall, on the Samford safety in 2006, the first player from the school drafted in 37 years, and he grew into one of the most irritating corners in the league. His best year was 2008, when he snagged five interceptions with 17 pass breakups and made both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams. He retired with 20 career picks.

He played the position like a provocation. On November 28, 2010, Houston's Andre Johnson finally ripped off Finnegan's helmet and threw punches during an on-field brawl that cost both men $25,000, and Finnegan was still taunting as he got ejected. That reputation for baiting bigger stars followed him into a five-year, $50 million deal with the Rams in 2012.

Madden rewarded the pest. After a 73 in the 2007 edition, Finnegan sat at or near a 92 across several games, hitting that mark in the 2009, 2010, and 2012 editions during his Tennessee and early St. Louis peak before the number faded through stops in Miami and Carolina.
