San Diego State Aztecs 2026 Preview: A Returning Quarterback and Elite Defense Fuel a Pac-12 Title Push

San Diego State authored one of the more dramatic reversals in the country in 2025, climbing from 3-9 to 9-4 (6-2 Mountain West) and carrying that momentum into a new home in the reconstituted Pac-12. The Aztecs went into the final weekend of the regular season with a shot at an outright league title before falling in overtime at New Mexico and dropping the New Mexico Bowl to North Texas.

The defining thread of the offseason is continuity at the game's most important position. For the first time in years, coach Sean Lewis (12-13 at the school, 36-44 overall across seven seasons) opens camp with a returning starting quarterback and a roster that added more in the transfer portal than it lost. Whether the offense can rise to meet a defense that ranked among the nation's best is the question that will define the season.
