Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesD+ FutureA+
A passer of the future in Maye, and a B, for the Patriots.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Pearsall. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.

The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Drake Maye
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 1 slot with a little surplus value in Drake Maye. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick35 Rnd2 Rome Odunze
Rome Odunze in pick 35 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
Nice patience on Kingsley Suamataia, who had no business lasting to pick No. 67. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Denzel Burke
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Denzel Burke in the 75th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick103 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Nothing to complain about; Dominick Puni went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick140 Rnd5 Khyree Jackson
A quiet steal in slot 140: Khyree Jackson for less than the market said. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick148 Rnd5 Theo Wease
They let Theo Wease come to them and pounced at the 148th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick181 Rnd6 Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at No. 181 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224 Rnd7 Steve Linton
They read the board right and Steve Linton was the payoff at pick No. 224. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick232 Rnd7 Ricky Pearsall
Circle this one: Ricky Pearsall at No. 232 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
