The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Lovett: A-. The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.
However the rest shakes out, Lovett at that price is a win they earned. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In slot 28 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Ja'Lynn Polk
They took Ja'Lynn Polk at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan at pick 91 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick103
Rnd4
Bucky Irving
Nothing to complain about; Bucky Irving went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in the 106th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick182
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade slipping to Round 6, Pick 7 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick224
Rnd7
Dominic Lovett
They barely believed it either: Dominic Lovett still on the board at pick No. 224. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
