Jaybeast17 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueD-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the 49ers: C+. The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Jacobe Covington, taking him 310 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Getting Neal where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In pick No. 11 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jacobe Covington
A wild overpay on Jacobe Covington in slot 43, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in pick 75 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick100
Rnd3
Karene Reid
Karene Reid at the 100th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick113
Rnd4
Tate Ratledge
They will replay Tate Ratledge at No. 113 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick138
Rnd4
Donald Chaney
A big swing on Donald Chaney at the 138th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Chimere Dike
Chimere Dike at slot 147 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick160
Rnd5
Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at the 160th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Brady Cook
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brady Cook this early at Round 7, Pick 11. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ali Jennings
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ali Jennings in No. 249, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252
Rnd7
Devin Neal
A running back of that caliber at the 252nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
