Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
D+
ValueF
NeedB
TradesC+
FutureD
Not the weekend the Dolphins were hoping for: D+. The Dolphins did not so much draft Ethan Onianwa as overpay for him, 327 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
The Rodriguez steal is the beam this whole class leans on. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In pick 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick30
Rnd1
Emmanuel Pregnon
In the 30th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in pick No. 43 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jalon Daniels
Jalon Daniels at the 70th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Chris Bell
Circle this one: Chris Bell at slot 75 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
Luke Hasz
Luke Hasz at No. 87 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick90
Rnd3
Ethan Onianwa
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ethan Onianwa this early at the 90th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dijon Johnson
They talked themselves into Dijon Johnson at the 94th pick, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick130
Rnd4
Blake Shapen
They reached a country mile for Blake Shapen at slot 130, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Taking Jacob Rodriguez in pick 151 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Zane Durant
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Zane Durant in Round 7, Pick 11, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
Robert Henry Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Robert Henry Jr. at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
