Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

The Trey Zuhn III pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 46 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

Caldwell at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In No. 31 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick63 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
Nice patience on A.J. Haulcy, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 31. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick95 Rnd3 Max Klare
Steal is underselling it; Max Klare at slot 95 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Beau Stephens
They talked themselves into Beau Stephens at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick131 Rnd4 Will Lee III
They read the board right and Will Lee III was the payoff at pick 131. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick171 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
They left a pile of value on the table to take Pat Coogan this early at pick No. 171. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick191 Rnd6 Kaelon Black
Kaelon Black in slot 191 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick202 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 202 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick209 Rnd6 Raylen Wilson
A reach for Raylen Wilson in No. 209; a little patience would have been rewarded. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick212 Rnd6 Cole Payton
A real head-scratcher, Cole Payton in pick 212 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
