Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueA- NeedB- TradesC- FutureB+
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Patriots and Lew: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Connor Lew, the No. 61 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 125. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Caldwell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In pick 31 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot.
Pick95 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
They barely believed it either: Michael Taaffe still on the board at Round 3, Pick 31. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125 Rnd4 Connor Lew
Taking Connor Lew in the 125th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jude Bowry
Value with a capital V on Jude Bowry in No. 131, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick191 Rnd6 Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. in pick No. 191 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick198 Rnd6 Jalen Stroman
They robbed the room for Jalen Stroman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick202 Rnd6 Seth McGowan
A running back of that caliber at the 202nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick212 Rnd6 Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jaren Kanak
Jaren Kanak slid further than he should have, and slot 247 is lovely value for the tight end. The roster fit checks out.
