Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Isaac TeSlaa in pick 171.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

So much rides on Colston Loveland that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Colston Loveland
In No. 24 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at pick No. 38 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick69 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
A straight-up fair deal on Carson Schwesinger at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick77 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
A conviction pick on Cam Skattebo at slot 77 that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick97 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
No edge and no loss on Jared Wilson in the 97th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106 Rnd4 RJ Harvey
They reached a country mile for RJ Harvey at Round 4, Pick 4, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick144 Rnd5 Upton Stout
Upton Stout in the 144th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick171 Rnd5 Isaac TeSlaa
A wild overpay on Isaac TeSlaa in the 171st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jordan Hancock
They paid sticker price for Jordan Hancock in pick No. 220, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
They reached into another round for Teddye Buchanan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
