Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureD+
The Payton reach set the tone, and the 49ers never recovered: F.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 37 spots for Patrick Payton, and value like that does not grow back. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Kenyon Sadiq
In the Round 1 slot they get a security blanket over the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
They liked Elijah Sarratt enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 33. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick58 Rnd2 Keith Abney II
They jumped the gun on Keith Abney II, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick95 Rnd3 Blake Miller
Blake Miller at slot 95 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at pick No. 127 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick133 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
They went early on DeMonte Capehart in No. 133, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick139 Rnd4 Aaron Graves
They reached into another round for Aaron Graves, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick170 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in No. 170 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick172 Rnd5 Bud Clark
A premium they did not need to pay, Bud Clark a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick179 Rnd5 Bryce Foster
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bryce Foster in the Round 5 slot, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick197 Rnd6 Barion Brown
A conviction pick on Barion Brown at the 197th pick that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223 Rnd7 Ricardo Hallman
No edge and no loss on Ricardo Hallman in pick No. 223; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
