If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Pat Coogan at pick No. 170 is 24 spots clear of where he belonged. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
