Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Pat Coogan at pick No. 170 is 24 spots clear of where he belonged. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In pick 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick59 Rnd2 Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at slot 59 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jalon Kilgore
Jalon Kilgore is a better player than the 127th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick133 Rnd4 Chris McClellan
No edge and no loss on Chris McClellan in pick No. 133; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139 Rnd4 Eli Raridon
Eli Raridon slid further than he should have, and the 139th overall pick is lovely value for the tight end. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick170 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
A wild overpay on Pat Coogan in the 170th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick256 Rnd7 Charles Demmings
They barely believed it either: Charles Demmings still on the board at pick 256. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
