The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Malachi Lawrence in No. 92. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Emmanuel Pregnon
In pick 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick47
Rnd2
Akheem Mesidor
They jumped the gun on Akheem Mesidor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Omar Cooper Jr. this early at pick No. 58. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
A wild overpay on Malachi Lawrence in Round 3, Pick 28, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
They paid a round early for Max Iheanachor in slot 127, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133
Rnd4
Red Murdock
They reached a country mile for Red Murdock at the 133rd pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jakobe Thomas at pick No. 138 is the proof. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick171
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at slot 171 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
