Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB+ FutureB
More right than wrong for the Commanders, and a B to prove it.

The Commanders did not so much draft Matt Gulbin as overpay for him, 31 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

Getting Hill Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Chris Brazzell II
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Brazzell II at No. 29, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick59 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
You do not let a linebacker like Anthony Hill Jr. reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick95 Rnd3 Malik Muhammad
They paid sticker price for Malik Muhammad in the 95th overall pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick147 Rnd5 Matt Gulbin
Matt Gulbin at the 147th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick187 Rnd6 VJ Payne
VJ Payne at pick 187 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jeff Caldwell
Nothing to complain about; Jeff Caldwell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
