Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC- NeedB+ TradesB+ FutureB
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Pat Coogan at the 133rd pick is 61 spots clear of where he belonged. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

However the rest shakes out, Hurst at that price is a win they earned. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick48 Rnd2 Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick59 Rnd2 Omar Cooper Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in the 59th pick with a little surplus value in Omar Cooper Jr.. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick80 Rnd3 Isaiah World
Isaiah World at pick No. 80 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick114 Rnd4 Bud Clark
Bud Clark at pick 114 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick127 Rnd4 Chris McClellan
They paid a round early for Chris McClellan in No. 127, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick133 Rnd4 Pat Coogan
Value said wait; Pat Coogan in slot 133 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138 Rnd4 Oscar Delp
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oscar Delp in slot 138, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick167 Rnd5 Kaelon Black
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kaelon Black this early at the 167th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick197 Rnd6 Ted Hurst
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ted Hurst in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
