Grand theft in the 239th overall pick: the Cowboys steal McCoy and grade out a C+. The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Bru McCoy fell into the Round 7 slot. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The cost of the Benson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, linebacker and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Trey Benson
In the 26th overall pick they get a featured back, a steep price for the projection.
Pick58
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A swing that ignored the value entirely, T'Vondre Sweat well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick99
Rnd3
Blake Fisher
Good price on Blake Fisher in Round 3, Pick 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Khyree Jackson at defensive back with cornerback, linebacker and other spots open.
Pick126
Rnd4
Shilo Sanders
A straight-up fair deal on Shilo Sanders at slot 126, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick174
Rnd5
Gabriel Murphy
They read the board right and Gabriel Murphy was the payoff at pick No. 174. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick212
Rnd6
Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson in pick 212 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Bru McCoy
Bru McCoy at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick247
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
No edge and no loss on Fentrell Cypress II in the 247th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
