Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Cowboys. You can draft well and still miss the point. The Cowboys did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to cornerback, which was the need that mattered most.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. They will need Estime to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
JC Latham
In No. 21 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick53
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in slot 53, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85
Rnd3
T'Vondre Sweat
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime at the 121st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
