The Cowboys let Haulcy fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched A.J. Haulcy slide 32 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
They will answer for taking safety early while tight end and interior defensive lineman went begging. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
The Justin Strnad deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Colton Hood
In slot 30 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a bendy edge with upside. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63
Rnd2
Taurean York
Taurean York at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in the 95th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick125
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Genesis Smith while clear needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman sat open.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jude Bowry
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jude Bowry at No. 150. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick152
Rnd5
Eric Rivers
Good price on Eric Rivers in pick 152, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd5
J'Mari Taylor
Value with a capital V on J'Mari Taylor in the 177th overall pick, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick181
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kevin Coleman Jr. at pick 181 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Bud Clark
The board had Bud Clark higher than No. 221, and the safety fell to them anyway. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick225
Rnd7
Isaiah Nwokobia
Isaiah Nwokobia at Round 7, Pick 9 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick235
Rnd7
Miller Moss
A quiet steal in slot 235: Miller Moss for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick252
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
Peyton Bowen in the 252nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
