Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent slot 34 on Brenden Rice, a name the board had a full 37 spots lower.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Thomas.
The Justin Fields pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In pick No. 3 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34
Rnd2
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 34th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68
Rnd3
Josh Newton
They let Josh Newton come to them and pounced at No. 68. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick103
Rnd4
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick139
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at Round 5, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick182
Rnd6
Nathan Thomas
Nice patience on Nathan Thomas, who had no business lasting to pick 182. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick224
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones at Round 7, Pick 4 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
