Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Raiders spent slot 218 on Eric Gentry, a name the board had a full 106 spots lower.
That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Raiders indulged a want in Campbell while a need in edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Jalon Walker in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for Dillon Gabriel at pick No. 66, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A curious use of No. 72. Edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Jihaad Campbell did not.
Kaleb Johnson at the 103rd pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Jalen Catalon at slot 139 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Shilo Sanders, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Shaun Dolac at slot 212 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at pick 216 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric Gentry. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
