Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Penix Jr.: A-.

Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Patriots came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Thomas reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.

With safety unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Brock Bowers and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
In pick 13 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Michael Penix Jr.
Circle this one: Michael Penix Jr. at the 34th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick44 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick47 Rnd2 Graham Barton
Graham Barton in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick68 Rnd3 T'Vondre Sweat
A slide stopped in No. 68, with T'Vondre Sweat worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick69 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick77 Rnd3 Josh Newton
Josh Newton at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick103 Rnd4 Roman Wilson
They robbed the room for Roman Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick105 Rnd4 Maason Smith
A curious use of pick 105. Safety needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick112 Rnd4 Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in the 112th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139 Rnd5 Braelon Allen
They paid up for Braelon Allen at the 139th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick150 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
They paid sticker price for Theo Johnson in slot 150, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick182 Rnd6 Isaiah Davis
No edge and no loss on Isaiah Davis in No. 182; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick224 Rnd7 Daequan Hardy
Daequan Hardy at pick No. 224 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick232 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at the 232nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
