Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB- FutureA
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Dolphins: B.

Nobody had Patrick Payton this high, and it is not close. The Dolphins reached 89 spots to get him at pick No. 162. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

Golday falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Joshua Josephs
Joshua Josephs at the Round 1 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick43 Rnd2 Gabe Jacas
A real head-scratcher, Gabe Jacas in pick No. 43 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at pick 69 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75 Rnd3 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
They will replay Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at slot 75 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick87 Rnd3 DeMonte Capehart
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for DeMonte Capehart. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90 Rnd3 Jake Golday
Taking Jake Golday in the 90th pick is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick111 Rnd4 Harold Perkins Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Harold Perkins Jr. at No. 111, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick115 Rnd4 Malik Muhammad
Steal is underselling it; Malik Muhammad at pick No. 115 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick141 Rnd5 Domani Jackson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Domani Jackson this early at the Round 5 slot. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick151 Rnd5 Drew Allar
Drew Allar at the 151st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick162 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in slot 162, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick212 Rnd6 Raylen Wilson
They liked Raylen Wilson enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 31. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick227 Rnd7 Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at the 227th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238 Rnd7 Charles Demmings
They took Charles Demmings at par in pick 238, which is nothing to complain about. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
