Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureC-
The Patriots overdrafted Dobbs and paid the price. Grade: F.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Jacob Dobbs at the Round 6 slot, roughly 216 spots before his name belonged. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick14 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In slot 14 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17 Rnd1 Javon Bullard
In pick No. 17 they get a downhill hitter at safety. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick26 Rnd1 Tyler Nubin
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders slipping to No. 35 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick36 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
A real head-scratcher, Cooper Beebe in the 36th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick39 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy is a better player than the 39th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick43 Rnd2 Javon Foster
They liked Javon Foster enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 11. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jackson Powers-Johnson
They jumped the gun on Jackson Powers-Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jack Sawyer
No edge and no loss on Jack Sawyer in No. 68; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
A tidy bit of business in slot 103, where Dominick Puni graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ben Sinnott in pick No. 140, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick141 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ainias Smith this early at the 141st pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick142 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Travis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick181 Rnd6 Hayden Hatten
A wild overpay on Hayden Hatten in No. 181, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick190 Rnd6 Jacob Dobbs
Jacob Dobbs in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick256 Rnd7 Jaden Shirden
Jaden Shirden at the 256th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
