Taaffe should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.

They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That Taaffe pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will need Stephens to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.

Pick27 Rnd1 Jermod McCoy
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick62 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Anthony Hill Jr. in pick 62, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
The board fumbled Michael Taaffe all the way to No. 100, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick108 Rnd4 Ted Hurst
They paid sticker price for Ted Hurst in the 108th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick133 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
Fair-plus on DeMonte Capehart, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138 Rnd4 J.C. Davis
Nothing to complain about; J.C. Davis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139 Rnd4 Beau Stephens
They went early on Beau Stephens in pick No. 139, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257 Rnd7 Josh Cuevas
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 41, where Josh Cuevas graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
