For all the boxes ticked, the Patriots skipped the loudest one: edge rusher is exactly as bare as it was.

The Roberts steal is the beam this whole class leans on. McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.

They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
