FutureB
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Oscar Delp in the Round 4 slot, a good 45 spots before the room expected him. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom. The dealing was even money, start to finish.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 29th pick they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58
Rnd2
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence in pick 58 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick127
Rnd4
Reggie Virgil
Reggie Virgil in the 127th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick133
Rnd4
Isaiah World
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah World at Round 4, Pick 33, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139
Rnd4
Oscar Delp
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oscar Delp in slot 139, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick187
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick210
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
Kaelon Black at the 210th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
