Draft Grade — 49ers

FutureB
A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B. Somebody in the Round 2 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Sonny Styles, the No. 36 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The Hemby pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback and edge rusher went begging. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In No. 30 they get an island corner, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick58
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Circle this one: Sonny Styles at Round 2, Pick 26 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick94
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Good price on Nicholas Singleton in Round 3, Pick 30, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick108
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick127
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
A surprising call. With quarterback and edge rusher still to address, they spent No. 127 on Domani Jackson, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick133
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
They liked Max Iheanachor enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 133. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick138
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels is a better player than the 138th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168
Rnd5
Bud Clark
They jumped the gun on Bud Clark, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick177
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
They did well to land Oscar Delp in the 177th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick221
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
They paid sticker price for Riley Mahlman in pick 221, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick246
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
Value said wait; Roman Hemby in the 246th pick says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Fair-plus on Jordan Hall, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
