Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesC FutureB
The Patriots won the night they stopped Bywater from sliding. Grade: B.

Priorities are a choice, and the Patriots made a strange one, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE in slot 103 with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots crying out for the pick instead.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Bywater steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malik Nabers. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick34 Rnd2 Bo Nix
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 34, where Bo Nix graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
Pick103 Rnd4 Cade Stover
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent slot 103 on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick109 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
Nothing to complain about; Blake Fisher went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139 Rnd5 Malik Washington
Nice patience on Malik Washington, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 3. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick182 Rnd6 Roger Rosengarten
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at pick 182, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick224 Rnd7 Ben Bywater
Ben Bywater in the 224th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick228 Rnd7 Myles Jones
Myles Jones in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
