FutureB-
The Raiders bet the future on Ward. The board says D. When a board-topper like Nicholas Singleton slides to slot 216, you do not overthink it, and the Raiders did not. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They will need Morrison to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
The whole projection now runs through Cam Ward; hit there and everything else looks smarter. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Cam Ward
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Ward at the 3rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick34
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Circle this one: Omarion Hampton at pick No. 34 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick65
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Xavier Watts in pick 65, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick69
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 69 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tyler Booker
Somehow Tyler Booker was still sitting there in pick No. 104, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick140
Rnd5
Benjamin Morrison
A real head-scratcher, Benjamin Morrison in the 140th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts at Round 6, Pick 2 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd6
Tory Horton
No drama and no debate, Tory Horton went about where he belonged in slot 182. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick216
Rnd7
Nicholas Singleton
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Pick219
Rnd7
Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter at the 219th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
