some1 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-. Nobody had Patrick Payton this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 37 spots to get him at the 172nd overall pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Wheatley steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 27th overall pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, and a steal at that.
Pick58
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 58 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at Round 3, Pick 28 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
They let Chase Bisontis come to them and pounced at pick 127. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Kage Casey
They liked Kage Casey enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Iheanachor a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick172
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at pick 172 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
