FutureC
The Patriots bet the future on Maye. The board says B. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on Smith-Wade to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick No. 4 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick21
Rnd1
JC Latham
In No. 21 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 4 is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick83
Rnd3
Blake Corum
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Corum in slot 83. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at the 92nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at pick 103 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick137
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
They did well to land Dallin Holker in the 137th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jaden Hicks
Value with a capital V on Jaden Hicks in Round 5, Pick 3, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140
Rnd5
Nelson Ceaser
No edge and no loss on Nelson Ceaser in slot 140; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick157
Rnd5
Moose Muhammad III
Moose Muhammad III in No. 157 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick182
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 182 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick224
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sheridan Jones in pick No. 224. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
