FutureC
The Patriots left with their quarterback, and a B- to match. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Hunter to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick68
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 68th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92
Rnd3
Cade Stover
A curious use of pick No. 92. Edge rusher and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Pick103
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 103 on Javon Solomon with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick125
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at the 125th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick139
Rnd5
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick 139 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick182
Rnd6
Javon Baker
A clean, defensible pick in No. 182 with a little surplus value in Javon Baker. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick203
Rnd6
Erick All
They paid sticker price for Erick All in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jontrey Hunter
Jontrey Hunter slid further than he should have, and slot 224 is lovely value for the safety. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
